Traits of a Modern Entrepreneur

Entrepreneurship is a hot topic in social, leadership, and business circles. Why is it that the thought leaders lean towards an archaic definition of entrepreneurship? My view of entrepreneurship has nothing to do with What or How you operate, and everything to do with Why you operate in an entrepreneurial fashion.

For many of us having a job is the equivalent to a jail sentence while others are happy in their job and thrive in that type of environment. The bottom line is not everyone is cut out to work a job and not everyone is cut out to be on their own. So how do you know where you fit in?

The answer lies in taking a look at yourself and some of your personality traits and work habits you may have had from the beginning and didn’t realize it. If you are unhappy working in a cubicle with two weeks of vacation each year chances are you may have what it takes to break out on your own. Yet when you search online for the traits of an entrepreneur you tend to see the same old traits that tell you what it takes to be successful. While these are not wrong in this post we are going to go further back in time to help you see a potential pattern for successfully breaking out on your own.

Did you get into fights on the playground?

I know… you are probably thinking what the heck this has to do with being an entrepreneur. It has a lot to do with it. If you were a fighter when you were young and didn’t allow yourself to get pushed around on the playground chances are you will not give up when the going gets tough on your way to being a successful entrepreneur.

Do you tend to work all the time?

Have you always been an overachiever and work all the time? This is to your credit when you go to break out on your own since getting started is the hardest part and requires the biggest investment of your time. This is why most businesses fail in the beginning due to the time investment that is required at startup.

Is working satisfying to your core?

If doing things for yourself is satisfying then working for yourself will likely be the same if you choose something you love to do. If working at a job for someone else is not satisfying this is another sign that working at what you love and for yourself will be satisfying to your core.

Did you love to build things?

When you were growing up were you always building that castle in the sandbox? Were you always the one breaking out the Lincoln Logs or Lego? This is another early trait of becoming a successful entrepreneur.

Are you a math and science geek?

When you were in school did you love math and science? Were you the one testing mixtures to see if you could blow up the lab? Do you still use math and science to experiment and work numbers? Being a math and science geek means you love to test, try new things, and get the most for your dollar. These are necessary traits to become a successful entrepreneur.
